In meeting the demand for a high temperature insulation suitable for the most demanding duties, KaptonŽ insulated conductors have become established as a primary part of the WST Textiles range of products. They provide an insulation with high electrical, physical and mechanical performance over a temperature range of -196°C to +250°C. KaptonŽ has been used in temperatures as low as -296°C and as high as +400°C for limited periods.

KaptonŽ Polyamide film is the condensation product of an aromatic tetra basic acid and an aromatic diamine. It has no melting point, is infusible and self-extinguishing (does not support combustion).

KaptonŽ insulation, with a coating of TelfonŽ FEP fluorocarbon resin, is lapped on to the conductor and heat sealed at 400°C, at which temperature the FEP flows to form a complete moisture barrier along the edges of the tape which also inhibits tracking between laps and bonds the KaptonŽ firmly to the conductor.

Lapped film insulation applied with a 50% or 66% overlap provides even coverage. In this way uniform electrical properties are obtained without the risk of pin holes when compared to enamel. These advantages, coupled with the unique properties of KaptonŽ, result in an insulated conductor with outstanding all-round performance.

The KaptonŽ may be covered with an additional layer of Varnished Glass or Polyester/Glass to improve resin retention in VPI systems.

KaptonŽ films are also available in special grades suited to specific demanding applications. These grades include:
  • Water Resistant - FWR
  • Corona Resistant - FCR
  • Thermally Conductive - FMT
