Mylar® polyester film insulation is usually applied with a 50% overlap that gives uniform thickness of insulation around the conductor, thus eliminating the risk of pin holes and giving improved electrical reliability, when compared to enamel or double glass covered conductors.

The film is generally 0,023mm thick and this, coupled with it's mechanical and electrical properties, has advantages when space is a critical factor. Mylar® can be used as a primary insulation, with glass-lapped covering for mechanical protection. Mylar® insulated conductors are used in special air-cooled transformers.

There are a number of suppliers of polyester film having a different set of mechanical and electrical characteristics and working temperatures. Mylar® has been chosen since it offers best all-round performance, but others can be used.

Consult the technical department for advice on the best film for the application.
